Gold Rush Summer Challenge 2012 Results
Team Tecnu II beat out their rivals Team Tecnu I at the 2012 Summer Challenge. The event was blessed with warm weather at the scenic New Melones Lake using both the Glory Hole and Tuttletown rec areas. The event started at Tuttletown with the first leg being a paddle via one checkpoint on an island and then north across the lake to the Glory Hole area. Teams then completed a set of 9 checkpoints on foot and returned to their boats for the paddle back to Tuttletown. Tecnu II had a 7 minute lead when they hit the beach on the return trip. It was almost an hour until the next team arrived but then there were a 8 teams within the next hour, most with all of the first 10 trekking checkpoints.
For the next leg, teams left the transition at Eagle point picnic area and mountain biked around the trails of Tuttletown. The entirely single track route provide fast and smooth riding with plenty of curves to entertain the teams.Flat tires were incurred by many as the trail had their share of oatheads. On returning to the transition they were then presented with a final two trekking checkpoints before hitting the finish line. The top placings went to Tecnu II, Tecnu I and Tahoe Truckers.
The warm temperatures took a toll on many racers who perhaps had not yet had enough warm weather training this early in the season. It was agreed though that the weather was a nice improvment on the all day rain of the previous year!
Thanks to the volunteers who manned the event, especially Mat Hanco who loaned the safety boat, Andrea Cavalli who stepped in at short notice, Derek Castle who compiled the results and Carl Davis and Richard who loaded and unloaded more boats than can normally be imagined.
