Mother Lode Multi Day Expedition Race Rules:
The event will be governed by these rules and the competitor instructions.
Modifications to these rules, if necessary, will be provided in writing
Rules:
Abbreviations: TA = Transistion Area checkpoint, CP = Checkpoint
01. The winning team is the team that crosses the finish line in the shortest time having visited all checkpoints. Ranking will be based on finishing time, after application of any bonuses or penalties, for teams completing all checkpoints. Teams not completing all checkpoints will be ranked based on the number of mandatory checkpoints reached and then by the number of optional checkpoints reached. Ranking of teams with equal numbers of checkpoints will be based on the lowest elapsed time, after application of any bonuses or penalties. A winner will be declared based on the rankings even if no team completes all checkpoints.
02. Teams will be required to visit checkpoints (CP’s) and Transistion Area check points (TA’s) at the location defined by the instructions and in the order defined by the instructions. A team has visited a CP only when all team members reach the CP and acceptable proof of visitation has been provided. CP’s may be mandatory or optional and will be clearly defined in the instructions. Penalty up to and including disqualification for missing TA’s or mandatory CP’s. In addition waypoints and gear drops and gear pickups may be defined. Failure to visit a waypoint or gear drop or gear pickup will result in a penalty of up to four hours. Proof of visitation of a TA or CP is usually in t\he form of a correctly marked team passport. Other forms of proof may be, for example, a clear identifiable picture or the statement of a race official. Use of proof of visitation other than a marked passport will incur a penalty of 15 minutes per occurence.
03. Teams will be 3 or 4 person. Premier category is 4 person mixed gender team.
04. Time penalties may be applied for rule violations or unsportsmanlike behavior.
05. Time bonuses may be applied for sporting behavior or safety assistance by teams.
06 In the event that teams are 'held' by the organisers for safety reason or lose time through 'force majeur' (as decided by the organisers) , then equivalent penalties will be applied to all teams. The application of the equivalent time penalty will be either at some later point on the course or as an addition to the teams overall time after the finish, For example, a team in 6th place is held at the ropes for 2 hours because of a lighting storm. Teams both ahead of and behind that team will be either held for 2 hours at some point on the course or have a 2 hour additional time assessed at the finish.
07 In the event that the course is compromised by an event beyond the control of the organisers, the organisers will have the option of using positions at the last known location or of assessing teams bonuses or penalties to adjust for the event. The choice of remedy and application of such adjustmensts will be at the discretion of the organisers.
06. Team members must travel together and not allow more than 100 yards between most distant members unless specified in the instructions. Penalty up to and including disqualification.
07. No assistance is allowed outside of the TA’, with the exception that casual assistance from complete strangers unrelated in any way to the race is acceptable. Penalty up to and including disqualification.
08. The following equipment is not allowed unless provided by the organizers and used as directed by the organizers.
- Maps other than provided by the organizers. Note that this rule regarding maps applies only from the start of the race onwards. This means that outside maps or electronic maps are not prohibited prior to the race, even after race instructions and maps have been distributed. Maps other than provided by the organisers may not be carried or used on the race course or be placed in team gear.
- Communication equipment except sealed mandatory cell phone and radio..
- GPS or equivalent including cell phones with GPS capability unless provided or accepted by the organisers.
- Means of transport other than instructed by the organizers. .
- Penalty up to and including disqualification.
09. Mandatory equipment is listed in the ‘Gear list’ which will be communicated to teams. Mandatory gear must be carried during those sections indicated by the instructions. Gear checks(s) will be performed. Penalty ½ hour per violation.
10. Non-mandatory equipment and supplies (including food wrappers) may only be picked up or left behind at TA’s or designated gear drops which will be clearly defined in the instructions. . This may include equipment supplied by the organizers. Certain items of equipment (bikes, boats) must be moved from TA or gear pickup to TA or gear drop in accordance with the race instructions. Penalty up to and including disqualification.
11. Life jacket must be worn at all times on or in the water. Climbing helmets must be worn during rope sections. Bike helmets must be worn during bike sections. Instructions on equipment use and progression during rope work must be followed. Rules of the road must be adhered to; specifically, teams must stop at STOP signs or when joining a major road, give way when required and ride on the correct side of the road. Penalty up to and including disqualification.
12. Front and rear lights must be lit and visible on bicycles, while in use, during the hours of darkness. Penalty up to and including disqualification.
13. One bright light must be attached and visible on boats or on one person in the boat, during the hours of darkness while on the water. Each person must have a light available to use. One flashing light must be attached to each PFD ready to be activated if the person is outside the boat. Penalty up to and including disqualification.
14. Team members must be able to swim.
15. Modifications to these rules will be provided in writing.

Safety is the most important element of this event. The organizers insist that you adhere to this safety information for your safety and all other event participants. While we have tried to outline the necessary information for you to have a safe event, please remember that this event can be dangerous! Be careful, your safety is your responsibility. Hike, ride, climb and paddle at your own risk! Safety violators will be removed from this and future events.
In particular during the cycling portion of the event:
Helmets are always required.
Be aware of vehicular traffic. Obey all traffic laws.
Riding before sunrise or after sunset requires visible lighting in front and back of bike as specified in state law.
Do not use earphones, iPods, MP3 players, etc.
Ride single file and to the right at all times.
Be alert and respectful to other traffic.
Control your speed on descents.
Watch for bumpy road conditions and cattle guards.
Unexpected weather changes can affect road conditions, be aware of poor road conditions due to rain or ice.Beware of unexpected wind gusts.
Gold Rush 30,24 and 8 hour Adventure Challenges Rules:

04. Time penalties may be applied for rule violations or unsportsmanlike behavior.
05. Time bonuses may be applied for sporting behavior or safety assistance by teams.

Rules:
01. Treat other competitors and non-competitors ciourteously.
02. Follow instructions form event oragnisers.
03. Use only equipment and maps specidified for the event.
04. Teams or individuals gaining the most checkpoints or total of checkpoint values and finishing the course in the prescribed time will win.
05. If teams have the same number of checkpoints or total of checkpoint value then the earliest checkin time will will
06. Teams checking in late will incur a penalty of 10 point per minute or 1 checkpoint every 5 minutes.
07. If a bike section is involved, healmets will be required.
08. If a water section is involved, PFD's will be required.
